3.5 Mile Run (3.66 Mile Run)

Who: Alone
What: 3.5 Mile Run (3.66 Mile Run)
Where: Struble Trail

The training sheet says 3.5 miles. According to the gmap pedometer, it’s .83 miles from my front door to where the quarter mile markers begin on the struble trail. It’s…. just easier to do 3.66 and not try to figure out where to cut the mile up the Struble short.

There was traffic on the way home, which is a rarity. I live 15 minutes from where I work. It took me 45 door to door. So I got a late start and it was getting dark, and experienced runner that I am, I … don’t know how to turn on my watch light. So I couldn’t obsess about the quarter mile splits the way I normally do. Goal was around an 8:30 pace though.

Out: 15:50 (8:39 Pace)
Back: 15:31 (8:29 Pace)
Total: 31:21 (8:34 Pace)

May I take this posting as an opportunity to propose an experiment for you? What if you did a week of training and did not monitor your speed until you were finished with your run? One bit of advice I got from a couch was that you have to learn to read your body and figure out your happy pace. Just like people (read: me) who cover the display on the treadmill, for many people, constantly seeing your progress or lack thereof can help to psych yourself out. Every time you look at your watch and see your time, your heart will beat faster, and you’ll shoot yourself with adrenaline to speed up. That might actually slow you down in the long run, because you expend more energy and oxygen than you needed to.

Those are just some thoughts from stuff I’ve been taught by much more experienced runners than myself. It sounds like you’re doing a really great job, and you’re so dedicated! I continue to be thoroughly impressed :)

I definitely did NOT get that advice from a “couch.” It was from a COACH. I think any advice from a couch would be detrimental to training for a half marathon.

Haha. I didn’t even notice that! I dunno about yours, but my couch gives GREAT advice, but it’s mostly about napping.

You, however, give good advice about running. It did pass through my head that not being able to see the watch is, in some ways, a good thing. I am quite obsessive about numbers when I run. When my heart rate monitor strap wasn’t broken, I’d do the same type of stuff with heart rate. I think it’s the gamer in me. I have thrown a towel over the treadmill when I’m in doing a run on one of those too, just because… some days I need to shut the brain down and NOT obsessively break down all the numbers. :-)

[...] I feel doubly guilty about it because Therese had just remarked on how dedicated I was! In actuality I’m just terrified that if I miss a single workout I may not be able to [...]
