Congratulations to the City of Philadelphia
Last night, the Phillies won the world series. The first championship in a major sport in 25 years for the town of Philadelphia. The first time since 1980 that the Phillies themselves won a championship.
For a town that takes their sports so very seriously, they needed to break that drought. This town needed it. A huge amount of tension went out of the city’s sports fans - they’ve finally won a championship! People were driving around the suburbs last night honking their horn and yelling out their windows. People spontaneously piled out onto Broad street and did their own impromptu parade/street celebration. We received text messages from friends - I believe Ali got one that said “Aaaaaaghgrhyadskyqdiqyeqey!!!!!!!!!”
I’m not a huge baseball fan. I like sports, partly because sports are cool. But partly because of the drama. Last night, the game brought drama, but the aftermath was also dramatic for a city starving for a title. So congratulations, Philadelphia. And thanks for not burning the city down last night.

This would have been funnier/more consistent if you’d put the score… after the jump.

As an update, some of my coworkers who are big fans are already saying that they can’t wait until 2080. Because baseball championships obviously only come to Philadelphia in years that end in some combination of 0 and 8.
I love Philly fans!! I actually do. It’s hard to dig pessimism out of a world series win, and yet!
