Dragon Age: Origins
The marketing for this game is terrible, but luckily it is misleading. The game is very good and a typical Bioware experience, and the combat itself is the best they’ve done since Baldur’s Gate 2. I loved Mass Effect and Knights of the Old Republic and even strongly liked Jade Empire, but those games never challenged me in any real way, while this game is very tactical and interesting. I suppose if the advertising brings in some new people to this type of gaming, I’ll deal with it. But contrary to what Marilyn Manson would have you believe, this is NOT ENTIRELY ‘the new shit’. Actually, in many ways it’s a throwback to Baldur’s Gate / Icewind Dale and even back alllll the way to Gold Box AD&D.

See? It totally worked. Go, positive reinforcement!
How do you like it compared to, say, BG/BG2? Do I need to get it? Have you finished it once through yet? If so, how long did it take? If not, how long have you been playing it?

BG2 and its expansions are some of my favorite games ever, though how much of that is shrouded in nostlagia? Anyway, this game is not better than BG2, but it IS better than BG1 in my book. I’m probably 60-65% through and at around 40 hours played, but I’m taking my sweet time and reading tons of the lore junk and have even circled back through some areas. I’ve heard reports that you can easily get through the main story in 40 hours, but as with other bioware games I have a feeling replaying will be important to hear and see other companion interaction.
So I would definitely recommend it.
