I got up this morning feeling a bit guilty for ducking out a half hour early last night because of the power outtage. Yes, I am a psycho. So I got up earlier than normal with every intention of getting into work a half hour early.
This was amusing, because when I got the call saying 'the power is still off', I was almost into work. So I just went on in. Which was good, because there was much that I was able to do to help... eventually.
The early part of my morning was spent standing around outside our building doing nothing though. I did volunteer to help carry diesel fuel up to the generators on the roof, which got me an outstanding view of New York City and northern Jersey. But that was the highlight of the early morning.
Around 10, we finally got power. We started bringing up our computer room and... there was the smell of burning. Which is simply not a good thing.
We finally tracked it down to an OC-3 in one of the Verizon cabinets. That is their equipment, and there was little we could do about the burned board. The fire department came (like 15 of them all piled into the small communications room) and unplugged the board and disconnected the battery supply. Right now, we still don't know if that will be fixed this evening and branch connectivity restored. Verizon opened a 'priority ticket', which means they may be in sometime this evening or, you know, next week.
So, yeah... because the power was off all last night, we still had not done our nightly processing run. So we got the system back up and finished as much processing as we could... and then started our run. At around 1. This would make our run around... hrm... 13 hours late. Heh.
The bank sent all non-essential employees home a long time ago. After the processing run is complete I have to go back in for some reporting purposes, and the bank will do some of their more essential processes... and if the branches are up, they'll do their input from the work of the day. Then we'll turn around and do TONIGHT's processing run.
I am anticipating returning to work at around 6... and I have no idea when I'll leave tonight. I shouldn't have to work late, but... who knows. We could have problems doing turnaround processing like this.
PLUG: Did that story inexplicably make you hate breast cancer? Wow, you have problems! Oh well, I take advantage of problems all the time. Turn them into opportunities, I always say. So, weirdo... toss a couple of bucks my way to help fight breast cancer.

Posted by: mum at August 15, 2003 03:23 PMIt lasts until mid-october, so you have time. We haven't even really started the fundraising yet... I've just been organizing and experimenting with the webpage.
You can write a check, or the website will also take a credit card and that way I won't have to keep track of your check. But either way you want to do it is cool.
And yes, checks made out to the American Cancer Society.
