Today was home improvement day.
Not many of you know this, but we bought a dishwasher a few weeks back. We live in an apartment, so it had to be one of those dishwashers that could plug into a regular kitchen faucet. We were very lucky to find it - it's full size and all, we just have to roll it over to the sink to use it. It looks like it will suit our purposes quite well.
"Looks like" because, well, we still don't have it working. Over the past few weeks, we have been struggling with it. We finally decided that, in order to have a functioning dishwasher, we'd have to completely replace the faucet in the kitchen.
Now, that's a job that isn't particularly hard... but it is something that has lots of potential for badness if one were to screw something up. Even still, I decided to put on my handyman overalls and give it a whirl.
We picked out a faucet at home depot. We took the dishwasher faucet attachment and screwed it into all the faucets, looking for a fit. We finally found one that wasn't that expensive but suited our needs, bought it, and came back home.
I spent about two hours this afternoon tearing down the old faucet and rebuilding the new one. I must say, I was pretty proud of the results. I don't consider myself a handy guy, but give me some instructions and I can do okay in a pinch.
So, we are sitting there admiring my work, watching the water flow from our brand new faucet. We tire of the admiration, turn off the water, take the dishwasher attachment, and try to screw it into the faucet.
No go. It has EXACTLY the same problems as the old faucet. Tapered edge. No screw threads inside the faucet head to screw the attachment in. It's... obviously very different from the one on display, at least at the end of the faucet.
I went from happy to furious in about 1.5 seconds.
We are now planning to take off just the top of the faucet, return it to home depot, show them the difference between our model and the display model, and demand the display attachment. Because I do not want to tear down the sink again.
Sheesh.
Now, to make myself feel better, here's a picture of my car sitting patiently in the parking lot of home depot, waiting for us to return... with useless faucet.

Congratulations on conquering the faucet replacement! And uh.. sorry for the ongoing saga of NoDishwasher.
Now wash your damn car.
Posted by: shubbe at May 10, 2004 08:57 AMWell, it seems you did better than my last attempt at household plumbing repairs. Mind you I didn't have any instructions to follow, but hey... the house needed a good wash anyways...
Posted by: Ford Cov at May 10, 2004 10:34 AMI was rather unreasonably proud of myself. Which is what made the aggravation all the more palpable.
shubbe - I thought about washing the car today! But the weather keeps predicting rain, which stops me, but it hasn't been rainy since middle of last week.
